Dr. Chris Byra

Although dairying dominates at Greenbelt, Chris took an interest in swine medicine and production in the early 1980’s and services most of the Fraser Valley hog farms. He is experienced with swine AI technology, reproduction, swine operation data analysis using PigCHAMPtm, spreadsheets used to perform financial analyses, health and nutrition programs and has consulted with most small and large producers in B.C. as well as breeding companies for 15 years.

Having participated as a speaker and writer for many swine extension activities throughout Western Canada, Chris was a member of the Swine Technical Group at the Veterinary Infectious Disease Organization (VIDO), a multidisciplinary problem solving group. In that capacity he co-authored the widely used Farrowing Barn, Weaner Barn Bulletins and the Dry Sow Barn Design and Management Bulletin. In addition he is one of the founding members and co-author of the Canadian Swine Forum, a bi-monthly newsletter written for Canadian pig farmers regarding health, production and financial issues. Thirteen swine veterinarians from across Canada provide refereed articles for the publication.

Validation of farms for the Canadian Quality Assurance program and providing financial management services, following the completion of an MBA from the University of Guelph, are his current endeavors. Swine production was always progressive in areas of diagnostics, health management programs and structure of production systems. The challenge has been enjoyable and a tremendous experience to be applied to other types of agriculture.

Dr. Josh Waddington

After a youth (mis)spent exploring a number of work experiences, Josh graduated with distinction from the Western College of Veterinary Medicine in Saskatoon in 1990, and since that time has been involved exclusively with farm and food animal practice. After an initial two very cold years in practice in Saskatchewan, Josh came west to join GVS as an associate and eventual partner in 1992. Throughout his time in veterinary practice Josh's focus has been on dairy and swine health and production management.

In the late 1990's Josh and his family took an extended sabbatical from veterinary practice to explore a little of this world via sailboat. At the beginning of 2000, after some fantastic travel experiences, he returned to work part-time at GVS, balancing the week with a half-time veterinary position with the Food Safety and Quality Branch of the provincial Ministry of Agriculture. This blend of jobs allows him to satisfy his curiosity in the area of human-animal interactions. This encompasses infectious agents transmissible from animals to man, food safety and quality issues, and on-farm quality assurance programming, all of which he believes to be a valuable practice asset in this age of scrutiny regarding farming and farm practices.
